NEW DELHI, INDIA — Amid rising global uncertainties and evolving security challenges, Cabinet Secretary T V Somanathan addressed the senior leadership of the Indian Army during the ongoing Army Commanders’ Conference in New Delhi, outlining key strategic priorities for strengthening India’s national preparedness.

During his address, Somanathan emphasized that India must urgently develop sovereign Artificial Intelligence models to safeguard its strategic autonomy in an increasingly technology-driven world. He highlighted that dependence on external digital ecosystems could pose risks to national security, making indigenous innovation in AI a critical priority for the country.

The Cabinet Secretary also drew attention to the importance of building resilient supply chains, particularly in the context of shifting geopolitical dynamics. He stressed that disruptions in global supply networks can directly impact national security and economic stability, making it essential for India to reduce vulnerabilities and ensure continuity in critical sectors. This approach, he noted, would help the nation remain prepared for both conventional and non-conventional challenges.

A key theme of his address was the need for enhanced civil-military cooperation. Somanathan observed that strong coordination between civilian institutions and the armed forces is vital for achieving effective outcomes, not only during times of conflict but also in peacetime governance and disaster response. He подчеркнул that collaboration across sectors can significantly improve response capabilities and strategic planning.

Expanding on the concept of Atmanirbharta, he described it as more than just a government initiative. According to him, self-reliance must evolve into a national mindset, where every sector, institution, and individual contributes toward building a resilient and self-sufficient India. He emphasized that such a collective approach is essential for sustaining long-term growth and security.

The interaction formed an important part of the Army Commanders’ Conference, where top military leadership is engaged in discussions on enhancing operational readiness and institutional synergy. The conference is focusing on aligning military capabilities with emerging global realities, ensuring that India remains prepared to address a wide spectrum of threats.

Somanathan’s address reflects a broader strategic shift toward integrating technology, policy, and national effort in strengthening India’s defense and security framework. His emphasis on AI, supply chain resilience, and collaborative governance underscores the multi-dimensional nature of modern security challenges.

As India navigates an increasingly complex global environment, the call for innovation, coordination, and self-reliance signals a forward-looking approach aimed at securing national interests while building a robust and future-ready defense ecosystem.
