NEW DELHI, INDIA — Congress leader Supriya Shrinate launched a sharp critique of the government while reacting to the ongoing workers’ protest in Noida, highlighting concerns over wages, economic conditions, and the challenges faced by the working class.
Speaking in Delhi, Shrinate described the situation as deeply ironic, pointing out that India is often projected as one of the fastest-growing economies and a global leader, yet a large section of its workforce continues to struggle with extremely low wages and difficult living conditions. Her remarks come amid rising debates around income inequality and the realities faced by workers in urban centres.
She raised serious concerns about the sustainability of current wage structures, stating that earning as little as ₹10,000 a month in cities like Delhi or nearby regions makes it nearly impossible for an individual to meet basic needs, let alone save for the future. According to her, such conditions reflect a widening gap between economic growth narratives and ground realities.
Taking a strong stance, Shrinate compared the situation to exploitative labour conditions, asserting that the circumstances faced by workers resemble a form of modern-day bonded labour, where individuals are compelled to continue working despite inadequate compensation due to lack of alternatives. This remark underscores the severity of the concerns being raised by protesting workers.
She also questioned the government’s response to the issue, arguing that instead of addressing the root causes of the crisis or engaging directly with workers to resolve their grievances, attention is being diverted toward external narratives and allegations of international conspiracies. Her statement reflects the opposition’s broader criticism that economic challenges are not being adequately addressed.
Shrinate further pointed out that the situation raises questions about the health of the private sector, suggesting that if businesses are unable to pay fair wages, it indicates deeper structural issues within the economy that need urgent attention.
