High Voter Turnout Signals Possible Change, Says Congress Leader Rashid Alvi

Congress leader Rashid Alvi on Wednesday expressed optimism about his party’s prospects in the ongoing Assembly elections in Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry, citing high voter turnout as an indicator of potential political change.

Speaking in Delhi, Alvi pointed out that the participation of voters has been notably strong across these states. “The voter turnout in every state has been exceptionally high… I do not make predictions, but whenever the voting percentage is significantly high, it sparks hope for change,” he said, suggesting that increased electoral participation often reflects a desire among the public for a shift in governance.

He further claimed that there is a growing perception, even among political opponents, about the Congress party’s prospects in certain regions. “In Kerala, even members of the BJP acknowledge that a Congress government will be formed,” Alvi stated, expressing confidence in the party’s position in the southern state.

Expanding his remarks to other regions, he asserted that the Congress is likely to perform strongly following the completion of polling. “Following the polling in Assam and Puducherry, it can be asserted that a Congress government will indeed come to power,” he said, indicating the party’s expectations of favorable outcomes in multiple states.

Alvi also took aim at the leadership in Assam, indirectly criticizing the style and conduct of the current administration led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. “The demeanour of the Chief Minister of Assam does not, in the slightest, resemble that of a Chief Minister,” he remarked.

Highlighting broader concerns about political conduct, he added, “In India—a land where culture is held in such high esteem—how can the people possibly tolerate such behaviour?” suggesting that issues of governance style and public perception may influence voter sentiment.

The remarks come amid heightened political activity as parties await the outcome of Assembly elections in key states. High voter turnout has been recorded in several constituencies, with analysts noting that such participation levels often make electoral outcomes less predictable.

While the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has also expressed confidence in its performance, opposition leaders, including Alvi, are interpreting the turnout as a sign of potential change. Final results will determine whether the Congress can translate this optimism into electoral gains.

Alvi’s statements reflect the Congress party’s broader narrative during the election season, focusing on voter sentiment, governance issues, and the possibility of political shifts in states where contests remain closely fought.
