India has announced its withdrawal from the upcoming COP33 UN Climate Change Conference, a move that has drawn attention in global climate diplomacy. However, the government has made it clear that this decision does not signal any weakening of its commitment to climate action or international environmental obligations.
Addressing the issue in Delhi, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that the decision to withdraw from COP33 was taken after considering multiple factors and concerns. While specific reasons were not elaborated in detail, he emphasized that India’s broader climate agenda remains unchanged and firmly on track.
He reiterated that India continues to remain fully committed to addressing climate change and contributing to global efforts aimed at sustainability and environmental protection.
Jaiswal highlighted that India has already demonstrated strong performance on the global stage by meeting its commitments under the Paris Agreement. He noted that India is among the few G20 nations that have successfully fulfilled their climate targets within the stipulated timeframe, reinforcing its credibility as a responsible global actor.
He underlined that India’s achievements under the Paris Agreement reflect its seriousness in tackling climate challenges while balancing development needs.
The spokesperson further pointed out that India is continuing to expand its green initiatives and sustainable development policies. Efforts in renewable energy, carbon reduction, and clean technology adoption remain central to the country’s strategy. India is also working closely with international partners to strengthen global climate cooperation.
A key example of this collaboration is India’s leadership role in the International Solar Alliance, which aims to promote solar energy adoption across countries, particularly in the developing world. Through such initiatives, India seeks to play a proactive role in shaping the global climate response.
He emphasized that India will continue to contribute to global climate action through partnerships and initiatives, even outside formal summit participation.
Extradition Efforts in Nirav Modi Case
In a separate update, Randhir Jaiswal also addressed the status of fugitive businessman Nirav Modi, whose extradition from the United Kingdom remains a key priority for the Indian government.
He confirmed that Indian authorities are in regular communication with their UK counterparts regarding the case. The extradition process is currently undergoing legal proceedings in the UK judicial system, which has its own timelines and procedures.
Jaiswal stated that while the matter is sub judice, India is actively pursuing the case and monitoring developments closely.
He reiterated the government’s firm stance on bringing economic offenders back to India to face justice. The case of Nirav Modi, who is accused in a high profile financial fraud, continues to be a significant example of India’s efforts to tackle financial crimes and ensure accountability.
He stressed that the Government of India remains fully committed to ensuring that fugitives are extradited and prosecuted under Indian law.
